Facts about Lawrence CountyLawrence County was formed in 1848, from portions of Mercer and Beaver County and was named in honor of a naval hero, Admiral James Lawrence. New Castle is the county seat. Today, New Castle is known as the "Fireworks Capital of America". Many industries grew up around the rivers and streams of the county. The beginning of our steel industry can be traced to the iron furnaces that dot the county - the Wil Roy in Rose Point and the Lawrence at McConnell's Mill State Park. Based on 1997
Census of Agriculture County Data, Lawrence County has 87,177 acres committed
to farm land. There are 621 farms in the county with the average size
of the farm 140 acres. Dairy is Lawrence County's primary ag industry,
followed by cash grain crops and livestock production. Lawrence County's population is a "melting pot" of all nationalities. It is a community with a rich heritage of friendly, caring people. Lawrence County is the Southern most county in the Northwest Region.
